Anxiety and CBD
CBD, or cannabidiol, has been connected to various positive effects, including the potential to reduce the symptoms of anxiety. Keep in mind that CBD is a cannabinoid found in cannabis and should not be confused with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the other major cannabinoid in marijuana. CBD is non-psychoactive and legal in most areas, while THC is psychoactive and has patchwork legality.
Research Into Generalized Anxiety Disorder and CBD
In recent years, various studies have been conducted showing connections between CBD and the reduction of anxiety. The National Institute on Drug Abuse indicates that CBD can reduce the stress associated with a generalized anxiety disorder in rats and other animals. In the relevant study, the subjects had fewer behavioral indications of anxiety along with a reduction in physiological symptoms, such as heart rate.
Research Into Other Types of Anxiety and CBD
Other early research indicates that CBD may have the potential for helping people with social anxiety disorder as well as anxiety-induced insomnia. A 2011 study found that participants with a social anxiety disorder who received CBD had reduced anxiety compared to those who received a placebo.
Finding the Right Dose
So far, research into CBD and anxiety has not been conclusive, and there is no FDA approval for using CBD to treat anxiety. As such, you will not find any official recommendations in terms of dosing. The general consensus is that it is best to start with a low dose of CBD and then increase it if you want stronger results.
Potential Side Effects
Side effects of CBD are rare, but it is possible to experience changes in appetite and weight, diarrhea, or fatigue. A more common issue is the potential for CBD to interact with medications and dietary supplements. If you take a medication that interacts negatively with grapefruit, then it will likely do the same with CBD, so you should not take CBD without careful monitoring and medical consultation.
Assuming you do not take any medications that interact with grapefruit, however, it should be safe to consume CBD. There is no evidence that you can overdose on CBD, but the risk for side effects does increase with higher dosages. That said, the research and anecdotal evidence available so far indicates that most people with anxiety will get more benefits from CBD than they will notice side effects.
Selecting CBD Products for Anxiety
If you want to try taking CBD to help manage your anxiety, then make sure you do some basic research before choosing a product. You want to confirm that the company is reputable and that the product has undergone third-party testing, preferably with a certificate of analysis. Remember that the FDA does not yet regulate CBD products, so the consumer has to take care of research.
You will also find yourself with the choice of CBD product type, with oils, edibles, tinctures, capsules, and other products available. This comes down to personal preference, but each will have slightly different onset times and durations, so you should keep that in mind as you make a selection.
